MULTI-SENSORY ART & PERFORMANCES BY #DEAFTALENT

On June 16th 2018, we will be making history. The Northwest Deaf Arts Festival (NWDAF) will bring together top national Deaf artists who share a vision for an inclusive & innovative multi-sensory cultural extravaganza made equally accessible for Deaf & Hearing Allies. For the first time in recent times, Portland Oregon will be placed on the map as a premiere destination for national and emerging local Deaf talent who will perform live on stage, backed by the latest sound visualization and tactile technologies.

The festival line up includes nationally renowned Deaf hip-hop artist Sean Forbes (Deaf & Loud/DPAN), dance sensation Antoine Hunter (Urban Jazz Dance), immersive multimedia performer Myles de Bastion & award winning poet Raymond Luczak.

The Northwest Deaf Arts Festival serves to create bridges between the Deaf and the Hearing in a positive way that open doors for under-served minorities, changes misconceptions about Deafness and is striving to make a real, socio-economic difference within the community.

In line with our mission at CymaSpace, we can’t wait to show you how lowering barriers that prevent equal access to art and culture, everyone benefits. See you in June!

Sean Forbes

Musician
Forbes, trend-setting musician who gets the crowd pumping with his winning combination of original hip-shop & sign language.

Sean Forbes is blowing up.

Forbes is the undisputed king of deaf hip-hop, an emerging musical genre that is giving hundreds of thousands of deaf people access to a cultural experience that until recently was all but unknown to them, while also bridging the cultural divide between the world of the deaf and the world of the hearing.

In 2010, the Detroit-based rapper inked a two-record deal with Web Entertainment, the label that launched Eminem.

Since 2012, he has been touring relentlessly behind his debut album, “Perfect Imperfection,” performing for more than 150,000 fans in 60 cities, including a sold-out show at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, where he shared the stage with Stevie Wonder.

His online videos have notched more than 1.3 million hits on YouTube and Facebook.

And in April 2013, he was crowned outstanding hip-hop artist of the year at the Detroit Music Awards, a nationally recognized industry event.

He also happens to be deaf.

Raymond Luczak

Poet
Luczak, acclaimed author, explores Deaf gender intersectionality with evocative sign language poetry.

RAYMOND LUCZAK (pronounced with a silent "c") is perhaps best known for his books, films, and plays.

He was raised in Ironwood, a small mining town in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Number seven in a family of nine children, he lost much of his hearing due to double pneumonia at the age of eight months.

After high school graduation, Luczak went on to Gallaudet University, in Washington, D.C., where he earned a B.A. in English, graduating magna cum laude. He learned American Sign Language (ASL) and became involved with the deaf community, and won numerous scholarships in recognition of his writing, including the Ritz-Paris Hemingway Scholarship. He took various writing courses at other schools in the area, which culminated in winning a place in the Jenny McKean Moore Fiction Workshop at the George Washington University.

In 1988, he moved to New York City. In short order, his play Snooty won first place in the New York Deaf Theater’s 1990 Samuel Edwards Deaf Playwrights Competition, and his essay "Notes of a Deaf Gay Writer" won acceptance as a cover story for Christopher Street magazine. Soon after Alyson Publications asked him to edit Eyes of Desire: A Deaf Gay & Lesbian Reader, which, after its appearance in June 1993, eventually won two Lambda Literary Award nominations (Best Lesbian and Gay Anthology, and Best Small Press Book). He hasn't stopped since!
